GAMEDAY RECAP PAGE – Friday (Feb. 7, 2014)
Ginny Carroll – pictured during the 2013 season – was one of several heroes who delivered in the clutch for Kentucky during its thrilling 10-inning win over defending NCAA champion Oklahoma on opening day.
Note: of the 44 teams that received votes in the 2014 preseason national polls, 32 of them opened the season at a tournament with at least one other such top team … here's a quick rundown of those top week-1 tournaments (with links to tournament home page, when available):

After a select group of games the day before, the college softball season kicked into full gear on Friday, Feb. 7 – with most of the nation's top teams in action. Of the 44 that received votes in the preseason national polls, all but five were slated to play on Feb. 7 (Michigan and Notre Dame had their season openers on the 8th, while Missouri, Hofstra and Houston are idle during week-1).
Thursday's 18 games with top teams had produced four upsets (22%; one of them a tie) and Friday yielded the same success rate, as the higher-ranked teams went 43-12 (again 78% wins) in the Feb. 7 games involving teams receiving votes in the national polls. Ten of the 45 games were head-to-head matchups, headlined by (12/14) Kentucky's 5-4, 10-inning thriller vs. the defending champs and 2nd-ranked Oklahoma. That game was played at Cal State Fullerton and the host Titans must have been inspired, adding their own upset of the Sooners later in the day, 3-1.
One other top-10 team suffered the opening-day upset bug, as 8th-ranked Oregon was on the wrong end of a 6-4 score, vs. Cal Poly (in Tempe, Ariz.). On the other coast, tournament host Florida Atlantic was a 3-0 winner of (19/18) Louisville while McNeese State beat (21/25) UAB, 5-3 in tournament action at South Alabama. Minnesota, a team near the bottom of those receiving votes, won both of its Feb. 7 games, including a 1-0 pitchers duel vs. host (17/19) LSU. Arkansas, a team on the fringe of the preseason top-25 (28/29), opened with a loss in tournament action at UNLV, dropping a 5-4 game vs. UC Davis.
In addition to the Kentucky-Oklahoma game and Minnesota-LSU, the day's more compelling matchups yielded the following results: (3/5) Washington was a 7-4 winner over (18/16) Baylor (at UNLV) … 9th-ranked Nebraska bested (15/12) Florida State, 4-3 (at New Mexico State) … 10th-ranked Texas outlasted host (13/15) Louisiana-Lafayette, 10-7 … and (16/13) UCLA won 7-2 at (26/28) Hawaii.
Friday's four other head-to-head matchups included:
• (4/3) Florida 5-3 vs. (31/30) Wisconsin (at South Florida)
• at (7/7) Arizona State 9–1 vs. (32/27) North Carolina State (5 inn.)
• (10/10) Texas 7-3 vs. (40/39) North Carolina
• (20/22) South Alabama 2–1 vs. (–/38) Syracuse

• Fresno State 1-0 vs. (32/27) North Carolina State (Tempe, AZ)
